As soon as those boots tear, the grease leaks out and the joint is six to eight months from getting really loose. Sound familiar, like CVs?
Despite New York's reputation for pot holes (and salt), my family typically gets 110-130k out of a set (no lowers?!) of ball joints. They stay on there so long they usually rust in place, and getting those puppies out is fun, fun, silly-willy!
On my grey '90 the front ball joints (140k, original) were so loose the front end shifted when going around reverse curves. There's something unnerving about the front end being able to shift the better part of an inch and a half going around corners. Thanks to the C900's front suspension pre-load, I could (very stupidly) drive it like that until I finally fix it.
Storytime over, the moral is that you can get around 110k out of a set and that the ones that haven't failed by then won't be far behind.
