I considered this option too.... It would be pretty straightforward to wire a portable audio device directly to a amplifier - in theory you'd just need an adapter to go from the 1/8" stereo headphone to the standard RCA input on an amp. You'd need a way to turn on the amp - but that could be done very easily by wiring a +12v from the battery or ignition switch through a little toggle switch and then to the "remote power" connector on the amp. Flip the toggle switch, amp goes on.
This setup would, of course, only get you two channels, very poor volume control, and likely not-great sound quality since the power level coming from the portable device wouldn't be all that high - you might get noise. You'd probably want to wire in a crossover network to get audio to all four channels and have some control over what sounds are going to what speakers.
It would work... but I gotta ask, with two places for a DIN stereo and three locations for three gauges each in a c900, why dump the head unit? My application was a Suburban, with no locations for anything... :)
