They usually fail from morning sickness, hard to turn when cold, or perhaps locking up on one side or the other.

Check the power steering belt for proper tension and condition...if it's more than 5 years old just replace it.

A groan is more likely a power steering pump issue....I'd just pull the reservoir and clean it out (you'd be surprised at the sludge buildup in the bottom of the reservoir...and that's where the fluid has to go into the pump so if it's clogged it can cause lots of problems) and then reattach the bottom hose, plug the top hose nipple on the reservoir and splice the top hose into a longer hose into a three gallon bucket on the ground. Start the engine and be prepared to pour a couple gallons of automatic trans fluid into the power steering reservoir...it will go right through and into the bucket!!! It helps to have someone turn the steering lock to lock while all this is going on...it won't take long to run through a couple gallons!! Shut the engine off and recouple the hose to the top reservoir nipple and set the fluid level and hope for less noise.

Otherwise it sounds like you're in for a new PS pump. Just get a used one...they don't fail very often.
