I will make a stab at this -- it plagued me for quite some time..........
Easy stuff first, but take out the trunk floor, and right side panel.
1) Gas cap -- this can allow fumes to enhance the aroma in the cockpit.
2) Gas filler pipe -- plastic can crack, and allow fuel to enter the trunk area or vent to the trunk.
3) Gas tank clamps. Look at all the clamps and carefully give them a twist to snug them up.
4) As mentioned by Jeff S -- look at the sealing rings on top of the fuel pump and sending unit. Any wet area will tell you that the leak is either the supply/return line, o-rings, or the o-rings under the sealing rings.
5) Check to see that there is no breach in the body gasket to fuel tank. I had NO fuel leaks whatsoever, but there was a breach around the the fuel filler pipes, and it allowed vented fumes to enter the cabin. This took months to figure out as it not obvious where there could be air passage. I used Air Conditioner tape to make a seal around the pipes to body, and the smell went away.
After the top five "easy" ones, then check the fuel return line, fuel filler pipe check valve, and the vent line to the charcoal canister.
