...remember my tranny problems? slipping out of third and reverse on an 89 turbo which i had just purchased and which had been sitting for two years prior to my purchase and which had also had a new tranny put in less than 4000 miles ago(so the maintenance records state)? well...i was planning on putting everyone's advice into practice over the weekend: new gear oil, pull the diff. cover and see what i can see, adjust the shift rod, and if all else failed, try the detent ball trick.
i figured i'd start with the oil first. i couldn't budge the drain plug, so i decided to kill two birds with one stone and pull the differential cover and let it drain that way. two year old motor oil poured out and allowed me to see inside. looked brand freakin' new in there. not a shred of anything on the magnet. okay, definitely looked like a new tranny. popped the cover back on and filled it with mobil 1 75w 90 gear oil. thought i'd see if that made a difference. yeah... it did. shifted like butter and never even came close to slipping. i never thought gear oil could make such a big difference.
so........i'm pretty happy. i'd still like to adjust the shift rod though. does anyone know what to use in place of the saab special tool that's supposed to lock it in third? it's the tool that fits into the hole and grove on the differential cover. any way to work around this?
