That your engine began to ping on high boost (without APC wastegate control) is exactly what should happen with these engines, so that's normal. The APC system is there to keep ping (pre-ignition of fuel from high temps when under pressure) that from happening. I've experienced a dying, partially blocked cat convertor, so I know that experience well. Overall performance suffers, gas milage lowers, boost is slow to respond, and the emmissions are high. When I finally replaced mine, the visual examination was telling and dramatic - you could barely see light through most of the internal core when held up to the sun. In my case only a small column in the center was passing the light, so that told me it begins to block from the outside and moves inward. With a new or good cat you can see light pass through the entire core. The engine's reponse after the cat change was dramatic as well - higher idle, immediate pedal response, consistent boost, improved gas milage and normal emissions.
There are a host of things that can effect this engine's performance, and I'd look to those first. General tuned condition is first on the list - plugs, wires, air filter, timing, vacuum hoses. Then you might also have carbon buildup inside the cylinders. That's always a performance killer for a number of reasons. Time for Techron, and use premium gas only.
