It should be 13.5 to 14.5 volts read from the battery. If the reading is dropping, rev the motor (preferably warmed up) & see if the voltage climbs at higher rpms. If they do, the voltage regulator brushes are worn down & you can either solder in new ones (armature shop - cheap) or get a new VR (eEuroparts $20). You should check all the cables as others described, but even if the alt. ground looks & tests ok, fitting a heavier one is a good idea. Your battery could be shot too - if it has removable caps, check the specific gravity w/a hydrometer & peer into each cell w/a penlight...the lead plates should look "crisp" & not be covered with crud. Auto Zone/Pep Boys/Advance Auto will test it for free.
