Here's what I came up with. (link below). This DIY keeps the stock shifter height but shortens the throws. It also keeps the reverse lockout, something most STS's don't have. You could also shorten the shaft if you'd like. If you take some off the top you'll need to recut the channel for the reverse lever. If you take some off the bottom you'll need to rebore the shaft for the reverse lockout spring to fit. Either way, shortening the shaft will force you to make some modifications to the boot as well. I made one that was about 1.5" shorter for my indy friend. His leather boot worked fine. Using this DIY technique, you can move the ball to a different location if you find that the shift pattern is not to your liking. Just leave off the 1/4" spacer, and move the ball down a quarter of an inch on the shaft. The only issue you'll have is finding a donor shift housing (either auto or manual will work). You may be able to have a piece made up from aluminum pipe if you're industrious.
