Doesn't sound as if even a totally missing shock would permit suspension travel out of normal range. And you don't describe it as even looking broken. So I'd look elsewhere first before tackling shox.
But then, if you're in there doing that it will give you a chance to look close at what's moving where.
How's it respond when you push down on that corner? Can you make the clunk happen? Get a husky friend to assist and maybe you can see what's going on, with car parked.
