I posted months ago that my '86 900 non-turbo --with plenty of semi-hidden rust and many, many miles, but still relatively strong, economical, and fun to drive-- has a weird problem: cold tranny is perfect, shifts smoothly and easily, never grinds, never pops out of any gear.

Except, after driving an hour or so --less in hot weather, longer in cold weather-- the gate for fifth gear just seems to disappear. It will run in fifth fine on the highway forever, but once it gets hot, after I downshift to fourth, I can't get it back into fifth.

Gate just isn't there and if I try forcing it just a little, it invariably downshifts to third. If I stop altogether, reverse is there OK, and if it cools down for even a short while, fifth mysteriously becomes available again. I recently tried changing the tranny oil to $$$ Redline MTL, which may or may not have quieted the gearbox a bit and even improved the mileage, but problem persists.

Months ago, I had replaced a completely broken front engine mount, which when failed had also prevented shifting to fifth when the engine bottomed out on the transverse aluminum struts. Problem went away with new front mount. Left and right engine mounts are original, and seem to be OK.

All the various suggestion I receicved on this board couldn't even guess at why this problem seems to be temperature-related. Ericksson thought pinion gear was crapping out.

Would really hate to have to trash my beloved Blood Red Slob, but given the rust, changing to a new tranny isn't practicable. Alternative may be to find another old 900 with a bad engine, and swap mine into it, but I've also recently done suspension and brake work on mine, and better the devil that you know, ehhh?
