If the distances is less than 11mm you don't need to do anything except releasing the tensioner ratchet and install it again.
Even if it is a little bit more than 11mm (12 or 13mm) it is really no need to worry since the amount of work fixing it is so labor intensive and expensive if doing it the proper way with new guides and such.
Keep in mind that your 86 "might" have the original tensioner still in there which is of an different design and if that's the case, you should get the later one as in the picture and install that one instead.
You can get a used newer style without a problem since they never wear out.
