I just painted the valve cover on my '89 spg, and drained both the manual tranny oil, and engine oil, and then added 20-50 VR-1 valvoline mineral oil to both (really thick when i poured it). I drove the car 150 highway miles after this oil change/valve cover job, and it seemed to run fine. Then I noticed some extra noise when I was driving around town, and a suspected lack in power. (thinking back, it seemed like it wasn't running like normal). Then I went and filled up with 87 octane like always when i'm only driving under light highway loads, and the engine just started getting extremely loud to the point where I shut it off, and had it towed home for fear of the worst.
The engine is now very loud at all times, but I was able to drive it around the block without any problems (just the awful noise). It sounds like insane valvetrain chatter and is a very constant and fast rapping sound coming from the whole engine seemingly.
Does this sound like I just used an oil that could screw with my oil delivery enough to cause these problems, or is this something more serious? I'm going to check compression tomarrow, but I just want to start the thread tonight, and get some feedback.
you guys always help me figure this stuff out! Thanks in advance!!!
