It can be a whole range of things - a hose fell off creating a vacuum leak; a sensor failed, a wire fell off.
The CEL is the engine control's only way to tell you something is wrong. The engine control is also pretty good at accomodating sensors that are a little off, and if one fails, it can 'work around' the problem. But you still have to be told to get the sensor fixed, so it lights the CEL.
So this could be as simple as a vacuum leak, or the engine temp sensor (not the one driving the temp gauge) has gone bad - the ECU can compensate for it, but you should get it fixed.
Step 1 - open the hood and look for problems - cracked hoses, hoses not connected, hose nipple obviously missing hoses. Look for broken or loose wires.
Step 2 - pull the spark plugs and look. Were they gapped right? Do they look a nice light grey, or do they look white (lean, could be a vacuum leak, clogged fuel filter) or black (rich - bad FPR, AMM, etc.)
Step 3 - Read out the engine codes. That CEL is accompanied by codes from the engine control. These DO NOT TELL YOU WHAT TO REPLACE. (Sorry for shouting) - they only indicate problems. So if it says the O2 sensor is out of range, that doesn't mean the O2 sensor is bad. A vacuum leak or bad FPR will cause an O2 sensor fault, so more troubleshooting is requied.
Step 3A - how do you read out codes? Step 1 - tell us what year and model (turbo, non-turbo, squirrel-cage...) you have. Big differences over the year.
