Joe,

I just had the exact same problem with a 90 SPG (125K), blowing the 30 amp #6 fuse.
I diagnosed it as a failing fan. Fortunately I had a spare handy (from a much older car), and, installed it. Problem solved.

But, I was curious why the fan failed, so I dismantled it.

I found,

1> The brushes were as new, lots of life left, no significant wear.
2> the bearings were dry. The forward bearing is a sealed ball unit. The bearing had a few minor clicks, but was not trashed!
The aft bearing is a sintered bronze, self alighning plain bearing with a felt oil pad.
It was very dry and had galled the motor shaft slightly.
3> There was a significant amount of carbon dust clinging to the brush holder.

The fan spun fairly easily. The bearings were not seized.

I think the major problem was that the carbon dust was shorting out between the bushes and increasing the current load. A good cleaning was all that was required.

I was able to get some instrument grade gun oil into the sealed ball bearing. Just let it soak in.
I cleaned the sintered(porous) bearing and soaked it in the same oil. Saturated the felt with oil upon re-assembly.

I mounted the armiture in a lathe and cleaned and polished the comutator and the plain bearing shaft end with fine abrasive cloth. The lathe was handy, but not required, this could be done by hand, or, chucked in a hand drill and cautiously spun.

To prevent arcing, be sure to clean the carbon/copper/junk from between the commutator segments. Use an exacto knife or razor blade.

The restored fan runs great! Now I'm sorry that I already installed the older unit. I'll have to replace that one soon.

This whole job took less than 1 1/2 hours and did not any pitfalls for the novice.

It's an easy DIY!
