I had this same thing going on my 90 SPG with sort of newly rebuilt trans in good shape. Only when the trans was hot -- ie when I drove on long trips. It would sometimes be tough to find 5th, and if I did, when I slowed down, nearly impossible to get it out of 5th.
I took my shifter apart because I thought that the bushing that the shift rod passed thru at the front of the shifter housing was probably bad (if it is, it allows the shift rod to move side to side instead of rotate, ie then you have 5th gear probs). Bushing was perfect so I cleaned, lubed, adjusted the shifter & reverse lockout pin, relubed with white lithium grease. Reinstalled.
Then I changed my trans fluid. Mine had smelly gear oil... I put in Redline MTL. Didn't flush... just drained, refilled.
And now. Wa-la. Problem 100% totally fixed with shifter adjustment and fluid change. I drove to Florida and back last week, all set.
NOTE: If your shifter assy is worn, make sure to replace the components that are worn... might help.
Problem fixed.
