i just did this-had exactly the same problem. car got hot, but the heat never made it to the corner where the switch is. i checked this with a infra red thermometer. paid $50 to have the rad flushed at a local rad place. i probably should have just shelled the $130 for a new one from eeuroparts. to pull the rad, just pull (to one side, out the way, no need to remove from car) distributer cap, coil&apc, intercooler and the 2 pipes that attach to it, disconnect both fans, undo the top two screws on each, lift them out, and then just undo the top 2 bolts that hold the rad in. easy. tools required (from memory):
7mm wrench for bottom hose.
10mm wrench & ratchet for top mounts, and intercooler, and coil
torx for apc
flat screw driver for hoses
torx for fans
1 hour removal (if you take your time, and smoke a few cigs!)
good luck, and do as everyone says, get the 82c switch and thermostat. you should be fine. good luck
