OK - so sounds like the compressor clutch is working. Check. This sounds like you're low on freon - if you are bridging that switch and it comes on, there ya go.
The other thing that can happen is the indash AC switches do go bad frequently. If you hold it in (depressed all the way), does the compressor kick on ? HOld it in for like 10 seconds btw...

I am trying to troubleshoot my air conditioner. The clutch engages with direct voltage to the compressor. I have tried to jump 30 and 87..both fans come on. When I jump 30 and 87b the clutch does not engage. What does this mean....since the compressor cutch comes on with direct voltage from the battery? When I bridge the two from the drier switch--the driver fans comes on but the compressor does come on so that means my freon is okay. What else should I check. All fuses are okay. I there a way to check the ac switch in the car? Many thanks. george
