I have three boxes. I have a relatively unmolested original (from a 9000 - ends in 4150) that I tweaked the pots only. I have the stock (ends in 6559) that I did the "red box upgrade" using the two resistors and instructions you can buy on FleaBay for $14.50 - easy and a reasonable price, and a substantial improvement over simply adjusting the poits, and an original (ends in 6559) modded using the "tweakmyAPC" site mod (Google it) using $10 worth of resistors bought at RadioShack and setting my F and P pots to the red box specs. The last one is the one that is on my car -- the others are collecting dust on a shelf.
You are either a "purist" or crazy to buy a "real" red box. or both. A genuine Red Box easily draws $200 -250 on FleaBay, and for that and another $50-$100 bucks you can get an upgraded intercooler as well.
If you insist on keeping your orginial (on a shelf collecting dust), then buy a stock box on FleaBay (there's a $35 "Buy it now" there now, and order the 14.50 resistor and instruction set, you'll be out $50 and feeling pretty good about your car. Use the other $200 on something more productive than buying a real red box.
