Get a 47 ohm resistor at Radio Snack. After you inspect the wire going to the temperature gauge sensor (just inside of the thermostat housing near the radiator, single connector) for shorts or gaps in insulation, connect that resistor between the detatched connector and ground. With this setup, the gauge should read right around halfway. If it isn't, you either have a short circuit around the wire or a bad gauge. If it is, and the problem comes back when you plug the sensor back in, you have a bad sensor. The sensor is easy to change, just unscrew it and put your finger over the hole before you lose too much coolant, then screw the new one in. A new sensor from a site sponsor like eE for around eight bucks, I think, so you may just want to replace it anyway. I guess it's the same part used by Daewoo.
