I'm having some problems with my 1992 900 Turbo and am hoping for some suggestions- I'm not mechanical at all, but am broke and am therefore hoping to avoid taking the car to a mechanic. I'm going to give all the info I can think of that might be relevant, but some of it might be irrelevant-- I'm hoping someone on this board will be able to sort it out:
First, the car has been difficult to start recently (takes a few seconds to turn over). Then, on a 2 1/2 hour drive last week the car started hesitating or chugging and the check engine light would come off. The chugging stopped with 1-2 seconds and the check engine light turned off within 4 seconds. It seemed to do this more at the beginning of the trip than at the end of the trip. On the way back (a few days later), the same thing happened. Sometimes the car didn't really feel like it was chugging, but I would press on the gas and get no response. Yesterday, when I drove to work in the morning the chugging was really bad and the check engine light stayed on for about 6 seconds. So... I replaced the distributor cap and the little black thingy inside it (it might be called a rotor?), as well as the spark plugs. The gaps on the old plugs were way off (between .35 and .46 or so), so I was hoping that that would fix the problem. However, this morning the car was really difficult to start- took a few seconds to turn over and then stalled once. And, it was still doing the chugging/hesitation thing. The check engine light did not come on though.

The mechanic I go to (who is wonderful) replaced the wires about 1 1/2 years ago, so I don't think it is those. A co-worker suggested that I check the gas filter, but I don't know where that is.

Any thoughts and/or instructions would be appreciated.

Thanks.
