There are apparently two types of R-12 replacement refrigerant, ones which are a mix of different, legal, refrigerants, which cannot legally be added to a system with R-12 in it, and often don't seem to work all that well, and the "HC-12" hydrocarbon mixes, typically butane and propane, and work fine added on top of R-12 though mixing refrigerants is probably illegal.
I am currently using the so-called HC-12. There are some semi-name brand versions but I bought the very cheapest I could find on eBay, it's all the same. The legality and safety of the stuff is debatable (though apparently it is used in Europe) but its compatible with all compressor oils, does a great job of cooling, and has none of the environmental problems of R-12 or 134, making it the refrigerant of choice for leakers that need regular topping up.
Harbor Freight has a very nice pro gaugeset for, if you get it at the right price, $35, which makes working on an AC much easier than the cheap little whips you get at Autozone for $15. If you are going to be emptying and working on the system get the $9 vacuum pump to, you'll need it for evacuation/drying the system.
