You either have to take the head off or separate the trans.
so after you have the engine out and separated, probably 2-3 hours w/o a compressor.
Mark the bolts on the timing chain cover!! I think there are 3-4 different lengths.
Do the crank seal, oil pump seal (and check the oil pump), water pump seal and I think that's about it.
I would probably take it apart one weekend. Order parts on Monday and then put it together when they parts show up and then put the motor back in the following weekend.
You will want to check the DS motor mount and upper control arm bushings too. Probably the alternator bushings (all 3 - 2 mount and 1 tensioner) would be a good idea too.
Things to check while the engine is out..
harmonic balancer
oil pump
water pump
steering rack
motor mounts
harmonic balancer
timing chain tensioner - make sure it's doing its job
the main gear at the bottom of the engine
things I'd do unless I knew when they were done....
alternator mounts
timing chain guides
return line from PS reservoir to PS pump (they are the cause of most leaks)
every seal at the back of the engine
take a good look at all the wiring
clean the oil pump pickup tube and
MAKE 100% SURE YOU PUT IT BACK TOGETHER RIGHT _ DON"T FORGET TO SEAT THE TUBE PROPERLY - I think this just bit someone on the board recently.
It's easier to R&R the clutch with the starter out. FYI
You really don't need air tools for this - get the drill adapter that allows you to use sockets - you probably have a corded or cordless drill. Break them free first (all of them in a cross pattern) then zip them out with the drill. The cover may be a bit hard to get off because of the line up pins.
Have fun!!
