Of ALL the shocks that have been critiqued on this board, I think Monroe is pretty near the bottom of opinions, as well as Gabriel. The thought of putting these "Pep Boys" "AutoZone" shocks in a fine european sports vehicle sends shudders down my spine. Before I worked in an auto parts warehouse, I put a set of Monroe's on my 87 Saab, maybe paid around $30. each and installed them myself. Not so good 2 years later. By then, I started in thhe auto parts warehouse, got to buy shocks at distributor cost. We had the el cheapo brand, which were private labeled Gabriels, or I elected to buy the KYB GR2 shocks for $17 each, gave me that "new car" ride, not too stiff, like their horrible (for Saab) Gas-adjust series. Many on this board trash KYB's ( mostly because of the Gas-Adjusts)but KYB's are considered a premium shock in many automotive circles.
You can get the original equipment Boge shocks for about $50 each from one of the sponsors. This can be kind of a no-brainer as it is a great shock. Maybe see if the mechanic will install the Boge shocks that you can supply for $200 for just the labor, still pay $400, but have Original Saab quality.
