after 20 years or so it gets corroded/tarnished.
The stock wheel contact is pretty good, the momo/grant adapter can have problems.
Remove the steering wheel and clean the ring with solvent. Polish it with 3M Tri-M-Ite (SP?) wet or dry abrasive paper (use it wet, use 400 or better) and dry it off and then use a good conductive antiseize or even a silicone dielectric compound. The idea is to prevent the ring from corroding and yet allow the pin to keep good contact with the ring.
On the stock wheel the plastic circuit board under the pad on my car had an open that would close and occasionally work one of the three contacts when I used it..the left hand one. Other times it wouldn't work so I just carefully soldered a piece of copper mulitstrand wire over the break...no metal under there to short it out and it worked fine. So look carefully at the plastic board for cracks/opens.
