I had the same problem and replaced my cable yesterday. $52 from eEuroparts. Some folks have gotten away with just relubing the cable, but it sounds like yours is beyond repair. Replacing this cable doesn't necessarily take long, but it is a true PITA, so I'd like to recommend a few things I figured out to make things easier on the next guy.
1. Get a light of some sort and look where the cable is routed before disconnecting anything. Memorize it.
2. Disconnect the tranny end first. Try cleaning the area around it before disconnecting.
3. The rubber grommet on the new one I bought was positioned way too close to the speedo end and was able to freely move up and down the cable like the old one. I ended up using some penetrating oil to get it over the rubber sleeve and get it to move back and forth freely. I tried wd40 first but it kept drying on me. This is a bit difficult to picture and probably makes no sense to those of you who have done this job with the older version of the cable. If you get the new cable in hand and hold it up to the car, it will become clearer. Do NOT spray wd40 or penetrating oil on the inside of the cable, as this will wash the grease out and ruin the cable.
4. Before installation of the new cable, cover the tranny end with a plastic bag held in place with a rubber band or ziptie. This allows you to move it around and play with it without getting dirt in it.
5. Feed the speedo end up from under the car to the hole in the firewall and get it to snag in there. Don't connect anything yet.
6. From up top, feed the cable to the back of the speedo but do NOT connect it yet. Be careful not to allow it to interfere with the heater control or the cruise control chain.
7. Go back under the car, pull the plastic bag from the tranny end, and connect it.
8. Position the firewall grommet and pop it in. Much easier said than done.
9. Do your damnedest to get the clips on both sides of the hole in the firewall onto the cable.
10. Connect the speedo end, put it all back together, and pray the thing works correctly because you really don't want to have to do all this again!
