1994 convertible brakes - rear caliper trouble

Sorry for the long post, but I would rather give some detail than leave you with a bunch of questions right up front.
I tried to replace the worn out brake pads on my 1994 convertible - classic 900 style. On the passenger side rear caliper, I had a problem with the piston. When I tried to back out the piston with the screw, I heard a clicking sound and the piston did not appear to be backing out. I then attempted to depress it with a C-clamp, and it did not appear to move. I managed to get the pads into the capiper and onto the disk, but the fit is so tight that the wheel gets very hot and smokes when I drive even a short distance. At the suggestion of another Saab buddy, I bled the brakes and tried to work the piston screw back and forth. It seemed to get easier to turn, but the piston still seems frozen in position.
I assume I have two options....(1) rebuild the calipers or (2) buy new ones. Does anyone have any other suggestions before I take either of these two labor intensive steps?
Thanks in advance for any help.
