Yep, I'm pretty sure you can. When the stereo is off, hold the volume knob down to enter Function mode, select Warn and turn it Off. It's been a long time since I've seen a stereo where you can't turn the warning beep off. I'll double-check later on to be sure.
I personally like the beep as I don't normally remove faceplates, but in the convertible I do - I'd hate someone slashing my top 'cause they want my $100 ebay stereo... The beep reminds me I gotta remove it.
I really like the stereo so far - it looks at home and is easy to use. I wish the display had more characters as I tend to name folders <Artist Name> - <Album Name> and files <Artist Name> - <Track> - <Album Name> and you only get 10 characters or so on the display, but really that's a minor nit, as I don't spend that much time fidgeting with song selection. I usually just throw it on random and let it go (20gb HDD FTW!). The remote is also very small, which is a mixed blessing. It's very comfortable to hold in the same hand I'm shifting with, but I'm sure I'll lose it quickly. :)
The Kenwood has many more features and is way more advanced, but the Sony is faster and simpler to use and looks better. Value-wise, nod goes to the Kenwood (+$~10 on ebay), but the Sony isn't specifically lacking anything, and looks better.
FWIW, I sold the Pioneer Premier DEH-P670 that I had before for $10 less than I originally paid, which fully covered the price of the Sony. Buying on Ebay generally means no warranty, but it's such a savings that you can get your money out when you sell it used, and buy a new stereo every year. :) I terminate all the car wiring and stereo wiring with two Molex connectors (5-pin for power, 9-pin for speakers) which makes installing a new stereo a 5-minute job. Plus I can swap stereos around from car to car quickly if the need arises.
