The initial symptoms in my case (93 900S NA, 200k mi) was accumulation of an oil slick atop coolant in reservoir. Coolant levels did not drop appreciably, nor did I see any white smoke in exhaust. Oil looked fine, but that might be expected if only a small amount of coolant was being displaced into crank case.
I thought I could live with it as a chronic sort of problem-- engine temp held within acceptable range (3:00 or half past on gauge) and car ran fine... until I experienced a cascading series of coolant hose failures. At first I thought maybe the hoses were just old, weak, and in need of replacement. Soon, however, it became a game of whack-a-mole: I'd replace one leaking hose, only to suffer loss of another shortly thereafter. I managed to detect the leaks very shortly after they occurred and found quick refuge and shut-down and so did not suffer extreme overheat conditions. I was also fortunate that none of the breakdowns happened in heavy traffic or far from home. However, it became clear to me that it was time to deal with the underlying problem.
I've since completed the HG repair, and at ~300 miles on, it looks like I did ok.
I hope that your problem is simpler to fix, but don't do as I did for a while and try to deny the obvious. The good news is that if, in fact, it's the HG, tyhe repair isn't all that bad as a DIY-- lots of resources here and through links. GL, keep us posted.
