Car died update & VR repair question

It turns out the battery was no longer being charged. I had the lights on & must've drained the battery stone dead over the 7 or 8 miles it lasted. I've read that the most likely issues are a failed alternator ground wire or voltage regulator. I attached a new ground wire but still got no charging current. So I pulled out the VR & the brushes measure about 3mm on the short side (the side shown in Bentley) & 4mm on the long side. I'm hoping replacing the VR does the trick.
My question is, how reliable is the VR if I just replace the brushes? My mechanic says he sees alternators fail on VRs with replaced brushes. (If he wasn't asking more than double the eEuro price I'd just buy a new Bosch VR from him.) Bentley shows only replacing the brushes when they're worn, not replacing the entire VR, so I'd have to think it's a robust repair. My only other concern is the "caution box" in Bentley that says to solder quickly or you can overheat & damage the VR.
My other option is buying a non-Bosch VR. The parts store has a Duralast brand for $32.
Any thoughts or comments on which way I should go?
