Those gremlins must have been hungry.
How old is the ignition electrical switch? That's my best bet. My '88 would run for 30 seconds and then all of a sudden the headlights would turn on when mine went.
Next possibility (this is the painful, time-consuming one): failed insulation allowing the wires under the dash to come in contact with one another. This also applies to the wires as they exit the main fuse and relay panel. See if the gremlins have chewed away any insulation there.
The final possibility is more for dead or intermittent circuits, since you are still dealing with the cylindrical ceramic fuses. This was the Volvo 240's achilles' heel. Get some spare fuses and a wire brush. You can get stainless fuses for the car to replace the ceramic ones and their easily-corroding tin contacts. ipd (http://www.ipdusa.com/) sells a full replacement kit for bricks, or just get the equivalent assortment of fuses at a local parts place. After you disconnect the battery, take the fuses out in order and clean the contacts with the wire brush. Be sure no bristles stay in the fusebox. Once they're nice and shiny, reinstall the fuses and try everything now. I always loved getting on the entrance ramp in my brickwagon and (halfway up the hill) fuse number 11 would lose contact and cut power to the fuel pump and stall the car. Stainless fuses and a good cleaning are the cure for that.
Beyond that, you may want to inspect and fiddle with contacts on the back of the instrument panel. If one of your connectors gets partially popped off, you could lose contact and the tach et cetera could go out on you.
I hope this helps!
