Re: '89 & '85 transmission inner driver swap Posted by CMyles [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: '89 & '85 transmission inner driver swap, Nathan ![]() |
Nathan,
The early inner drivers had a smaller overall diameter and so also a smaller tripod bearing inside. In late '86 (as I recall) the diameter of the inner driver and tripod bearing were increased. Very few 1985 cars still have the original inner drivers and tripods and when they were replaced they generally got updated to the new, larger parts. The newer parts are direct replacements for the earlier ones but of course you must change the driver and tripod at the same time, you wouldn't want a small tripod in a large driver and you can't put the large tripod in the earlier, smaller driver. You can tell the drivers apart because the earlier style has 3 rings around it and the later one has only 2. You count the ring at the rim, the ring where the boot stops and on the early unit a third ring mid shell. Late drivers lack the ring at mid shell. I don't think that the early style drivers and tripods are available new anymore. The correct way to change an inner driver is to remove it from the round aluminum housing, install the new driver in that housing and then put it back on the gearbox with the shims just as they were. Change the seal, o'ring and axle bearing while you're at it. The snap ring is usually pinched in it's groove and will be damaged if you don't free it before you try to spread it. Stand the assembly on a bench and slide a pipe over the axle so it rests on the snap ring, then smack the pipe with a hammer. If the snap ring will spin around it's ready to spread. People sometimes put bent snap rings on these and the inner driver then slips out of the tranny while they're driving. Coat the six bolts with sealant or you'll have an oil leak. Do one side at a time so the differential doesn't drop in the case, that makes re-assembly harder. Cheers.
