DD,
I usually start on these by asking, "is it leaking only when it's running, or does it leak when it's parked?" Distinguishing between the two possibilities goes a long way towards finding the leak so I'd recommend that you go to the trouble to do that. That may require wiping it clean and leaving it parked for a while. These 5 speed trannys have a limited number of places that they can leak from. The engine has more possibilities so being sure which it is also helps (not made easier by the fact that they usually both have motor oil in them). Lastly, cleaning the hell out of everything and then seeing where the oil issues from can help. Removing the skid plate is a good idea as it confuses the situation. On the tranny the big drain plug (kind of between the axles) is suspect and the six bolts on each side which retain the axle housings can leak. They go through the case so must be coated with sealant. Axle seals eventually leak and the gaskets at any of the 4 cover plates (front, rear and 2 on the pass. side) can leak. There are seals (o'rings) associated with the base of the tranny dipstick that could leak while running. Some of the bolts that hold the engine and tranny together have to be sealed as they go through to the tranny also (would leak while running, not parked). If any of those bolts were ever loosened and re-tightened without fresh sealant then they are suspect for leaks. Up high and at the front (so only leak when running) the 3 little clutch slave bolts go through and need to be sealed and the large flat o'ring behind the clutch shaft cover plate is often overlooked (although a leak there is pretty obvious). Have the axles ever been out of this tranny? You can also get oil detection dye for about $4 from an auto parts dealer. Put that in your tranny, drive it bit and go looking with a black light and you'll probably find the leak source. Hope some of this helps.
