First, remove the rubber bellows between the center storage console and what I call the floor console, you know, the thing with the switch in it. Next, after pulling off the rubber shifter cover from the bottom, remove the two screws holding the floor console faceplate to the main body of the floor console. (For slushamatics, grab on the shift pattern cover and pull it off.) Take that piece off, then remove three bolts at the front (two near shifter, one just ahead of the key switch) and two screws at the rear (under rear ashtray) to get the main console body loose. Without breaking the console and also without putting holes in your front seats, take the floor console plastic body out. I've found that taking the key out, pulling up the rear of the console and reinserting the key and then shifting into first gear helps with this. While you're in there, reach in and disconnect the wires from the interior light switch or just pop the switch out. Also grab the green disc from around the ignition key and pull the bulb holder for the key light out of the console body. When you're all done, neutral or third gear would be nice.
Make a note of the electrical connections on the ignition switch. My gallery helps if my '88 and the donor '87 and my '92 are similar to your '86.
With the funky three-sided nut removal tool or a pair of needle-nose pliers, remove the three bolts holding the shifter assembly to the floor. After those are out, rotate the shifter assembly on its side and remove the bolts holding the lower cover on. There are three of them.
After the cover is off, remove the two screws from the ignition switch and all the connectors. I have the replacement switch in hand when I do this and transfer the connectors one at a time. As always, "installation is the reverse of removal."
Important: if you have an early '86 900, you need someone else's advice on adjusting the shifter centering as shown on page 432-6 of the Bentley 16 valve book (it's probably 432-6 in the 8 valve book too) and my fingers are getting tired. The shifter alignment is similar but you align the car in reverse instead of third, as mentioned below. Then you adjust the centering spring if necessary.
Put the cover back on (three screws), basically line up the shifter assembly again, put the transmission in third gear (pull the rod and shifter assembly toward you while moving the shifter straight forward) and drop a punch or drill bit in the alignment hole and the shifter rod at the front of the shifter assembly. Wiggle the shifter around so this alignment is right on center and the gear is firmly engaged and tighten the goofy nuts. At this point, it would be a good idea to be sure all of your gears engage smoothly. If not, you can move the shifter assembly fore and aft and side to side to make it "favor" going into one side of the pattern or another a little more. For example, if you can't get the car into third all the way, move the shifter rearward.
If your shifting is okay now and the console is tight to the floor, you may reassemble the console.
