For all the work involved with installing an auxillary unit, I recommend just replacing what needs replaced. When you say the core is shot, are you you sure? Usually it's heater control valve that dies and causes a problem by leaking. Because the valve is attached to the core, it may appear the problem is with the core. It's not that difficult to remove and replace either one. All of it is done from below once the knee pad and heating ducts are removed. It is clumsy at times and can be frustrating having to work laying on your back. I remove the front seat to make the whole thing easier on my back and patience.
