i wouldnt think the shift shaft seal would get oil up to that location.
i just did a HG job on a 89 with the same oily mess on the firewall and alt and went thru the same process - this car is definitely leaking oil out the FS and/or oil pump o ring...

ps perhaps it pushes out more oil when the car is being driven ie under load and higher RPM. i'm sure you've got the PCV valve oriented correctly, right?
