"Slot". Do you mean "bore" or "hole". Just want to make sure that we're talking about the same thing. The bore is slightly deeper than the width of the seal and the seal is a tight fit.
I always just start the seal with my digits then lay a small piece of hardwood flat on the face of the seal and then carefully drive it in with a hammer. I suspect that you've ripped away most of the seal but left the steel outer rim of the seal in the bore. The wall of the bore should appear as smooth aluminum. Good luck.
