Pulling fault codes on a '93?

After my died in the rain experience last week, which did NOT seem to be ignition related, I am trying to figure out if I dare ever trust the car (which is running fine now) out of town again.
I figured I ought to pull the spark codes using the switch and jumper method.
What has me confused, is that it says that when all the codes are read it will display continous long flashes. But it also says if you let it flash 3 times it will erase all the codes. Does this mean to let it flash exactly 3 times, or that anything more than 3 and the codes will be erased.
It also says not to attempt to clear the codes until it is reading 00000,Seeing as how is signals by blinking a certain number of flashes, I don't understand how it could display "00000" .
That aside, I am getting the code 12224 repeatedly. According to the chart in Bentley, this means the air fuel mixture is too rich. It doesn't seem to me this would kill the car dead (ans there was no gassy smell when it died, I checked). It also says the engine light will be on. When I had the dying in the rain experience the CEL was not consistantly on - the light would come on before it died sometimes but not othertimes.
