because it's the oil that's changed. So if you achieved 250,000 miles using 10W30, that's great, but this year's 10W30 motor oil is not the same as the stuff you've been using. If I recall correctly, there's about half the ZDDP in the recently-changed formulations meeting ILSAC specs.
There's a lubrication engineer who posts to this forum once in a while, and his recommendations include motorcycle oils. These still have decent levels of ZDDP, are heat resistant (our gearboxes see a lot of engine heat) and are formulated for the shared oil sump that lubricates both engines and transmissions on motorcycles.
I just put in 10W40 motorcycle oil. I've also used Redline MTL and others on this forum have used manual transmission specific lubricants like Honda's fluid and GM's synchromesh fluid. Gearbox oil (API GL5 spec) for formulated for hypoid gears appears to be acceptable in the owner's manuals, but from what I understand, it is corrosive to brass synchros and is not as heat resistant as motorcycle oils.
I'd say, "use what you want" but I wouldn't include modern motor oils on this list.
