dose the car now hiss, sounding like a jet-engine.
ive had a pump sounding like this, pretty much like it was on the runway preparing for takeoff,
i drove the car with this (soon to be caput pump) for 150,000 miles before it kicked the bucket which left me standing on the side of the road. (very exhilarating)
in any case having the pump make constant noise only gives a warning of interment failure,
tomorrow or 150,000 down the road the pump may catch a case of ..death.
taking in account your heath, i would order a pump and pre-pump from eeuroparts, and over the weekend install it taking it easy.
perhaps work on it every other hour (taking a rest when the hour falls on an even number, you know at 8am,10,12,2,4 and proceed to install the pump on the odd. but then i dont know the extent of tolerance you have for pain, being with the bad back.
heck my tolerance is weak when it comes to my lower jaw teeth hurting, i cry like a little girl, but when the upper teeth hurt i just stand there screaming,,, (come on.. that all you got. standing there with fat cheek and all), but getting back to the pump,
it is way, way,. easy to change but if you don't want to get into the mess of doing it have a shop do it, not that other guy.
with the amount mileage on the car it was only a matter of time before it would start to act up.
the odds as you say are great for it happening at there shop but i would look at it as wining the lottery, and well you just did.
look at changing out the fuel filter along with the pump and pre-pump.
theres a screen that goes in with the pre-pump change that out also.
doing this all yourself it would run 300 buxs.
having a shop do it and you bring the parts, anywhere from 500 to 700
having a shop do it and they buy the parts 700 to 1100.
all it really comes down to is, how much do you want to not get involved on fixing the car.
if money is tight and you willing to do everything yourself for rock bottom,
go to a pick `n pull and find a saab with 100,000 miles or around there and pull that pump and pre-pump and install it on the car, your looking to spend 50$
i frequent junk yards every chance i get, if not to just look around or to buy a part and well i came across a few decent amount of saabs which sit in the yards with 110,000 to 290,000 registered on their clock.
its up to you what rout you want to take but the chances the shop was at fault is unlikely, only time i would involve the shop is, if when they took out the ecu they dropped it and now its sending a massive amount of current, but the chances of this is maybe 1%
200,000 miles is the time the pump should start to go/make noise.
personally, when the cars idling and you walk around to the rear of the car and it is a steady hissing, (jet engine sound)
i would drive it untill it dies and has me walking, but that just me.
oh, and if your thinking of having the operation done by someone... dont bring it to the people your talking about. but...... sounds like you know this :)
