I don't open the bleeder until the coolant has been flowing through the radiator for a couple of minutes. You can determine this by feeling the outlet hose of the radiator. If it's hot, then the thermostat has opened and coolant is flowing through the radiator. You want to give the air bubbles sufficient time flow through the entire system, reaching the highest point at the bleeder screw. That's why it's a good idea to do it again the next day to bleed out any additional air from bubbles which took some additional time to arrive at the top.
