Yep - you can switch to the later drivers, which isn't a bad idea considering the scarcity of the earlier ones. You ideally want the shorter-length axles from pre-mid-'88, but I'm pretty sure they'll all work. I have the longer ones on my 1980 900T and haven't had any issues. Also, you'll need to have the barrel-style (solid) motor mount cover for the transmission - the hydraulic one won't work without welding on the car. That means either an '87 or earlier transmission, or a '91+ non-turbo transmission. You can swap the front covers, but you need to be sure the cover has the provision for the front support bearing if the transmission uses it. I don't know what the cutoff for that bearing is. Also, there is some weirdness in shifters - at some point, the floorpan changed slightly so ignition switch & shifter housing from a "later" car won't physically fit on the floor of the '79 - I ran into this little issue putting the housing from an '88 in my '80. My solution was to grind off a little of the plastic under-cover. Which reminds me - be sure your shifter housing matches the transmission - it needs to have the centering setup if the transmission does not. I'd recommend finding a self-centering transmission - it'll simplify things.
