Strange ball joints

Ever since I got my SPG a couple of months ago, I had been annoyed by its darty handling. A wheel alignment fixed up a lot, but the car was still too sensitive to side winds, truck bow waves and uneveness of the pavement.
The guy who sold me the car told me that he car had new balljoints a couple of months prior so I didn't have any strong reason to suspect them, they sure looked new, they didn't clunk or rattle over any bumps. The A arm bushes were OK, and so that left me thinking the rear axle bushes must be flogged, but that didn't gel with the feel of the fault, which I reckoned felt more like bad ball joints than anything so I decided to replace them for peace of mind's sake.
Well, the transformation was complete. The bugger now tracks beautifully, no more darting. The car is now a pleasure to drive.
The 'bad' BJs have Meyle imprinted on the rubber boot and have steel plate lids. The strange thing is that the old BJs don't feel bad. If I manually twist them through their range of travel they still feel nice and there is no evident play. The new ones were Scan-Tech which only cost me A$28 each. What gives?
