I have considered it as well, finding the stock ones inadequate compared to some other cars i've owned. The problem is figuring out how to do it without making it look stupid :)
One thought I had was to use the housing for the 3rd brake light in the window - replacing the lens with a fabricated clear one, and wiring that to the reverse lights and use plain white bulbs - then putting some energy-efficient red LEDs inside that same housing, arranged around the bulbs, that will glow red with the brakes. Problems:
1) making sure the LEDs aren't too harsh and annoy drivers
2) I have no idea how well this would illuminate without actually doing it.
