The 5 speeds are all basically the same except for the primary drive ratio (chain sprockets). That can be determined by reading the series number (as you already know). There were improvements made to the internals over the years but they were always done to all units. For instance, the bigger rear pinion bearing was introduced in 1989 to all 5 speeds, turbo and NA. My favorite units are the 1989-90 variants. The chains and sprockets are easily changed to afford the desired input ratio although you'll want to acquire the right used sprockets somewhere (I don't think that you'll want to buy new ones).
