I've never had an ECU die on me. When my '92 SC did this in the spring, the CEL was on and the upshift light flashed because of bad connections to the air mass meter.
High idle from cold would be a shot NTC sensor, which is a whole heck of a lot cheaper to replace, or a sticking AIC valve, which is still cheaper than an ECU.
I didn't have to pull the codes for my problems, but you might want to. I just started by wiggling the connectors under the hood (NTC, AMM, AIC, knock sensor, oxygen sensor, hall sensor/crank position) and when the idle sputtered and the car started going berserk when I wiggled the air mass meter connection, I had my answer. Unfortunately, the bad connection was on the circuit board on the AMM itself, the victim of a bad "rebuild."
The recall for 900 ECUs was for California-spec 1989 turbos, IIRC.
If wiggling wires doesn't reveal any problems, you may want to move on to having the fuel system tested. Have a mechanic test the running, rest, and residual pressures.
