I've used amsoil 15W-40 marine/diesel synthetic for twenty years or so...never had any problem down to -40F/C, even in northern michigan or canada winters.
If you REALLY want to be ready for cold weather, use a battery heating mat and keep the battery above 32F!!!! Also HEET or some other type of fuel conditioner/moisture adsorbant in fuel. You can also fill up the trans with Amsoil's racing (Type F) synthetic ATF and the diff with amsoil synthetic gear lube.
One of the problems with cold weather and heated engines is it gives people the mistaken impression they can just start up their warm engines and go drive 50mph. In REALLY cold weather, -20F and below, for example, you need to start the engine, let it stablilize for 30 seconds or so, and then move off slowly, not to mention checking for tires frozen to the ground (rock it to release the tires!), give the shocks a couple miles to warm up (they don't necessarily have synthetic oil in them!!) and wheel bearings, CV joints, etc. Other things like rubber suspension bushings don't like cold either and can possibly crack. So take your time!
