OTOH, if IAC isn't working idle speed can easily change 50-100 rpm with timing slightly retarded (from where it might have been before you pulled the distributor).
Glad the advance pot installation worked.
One other thing...if the vacuum to the advance pot is ported, i.e., vacuum/pressure once the throttle plate is off idle (and the throttle plate is supposed to be CLOSED at idle, this is set by the idle screw and ECU informed by the idle microswitch on the throttle plate switch), the timing will be neither advanced or retarded by the pot, it will be the static setting. Once the throttle plate is opened the vacuum port is uncovered and timing adjusted according to vacuum at the throttle body tap.
IIRC, disconnecting the vacuum line to the vacuum motor at the throttle body doesn't show vacuum at idle. YMMV.
