I've had that year/engine. Trying to think of possibilities beyond what you've already checked... Compression and timing come to mind. Also, the spark itself may not be the right temperature. Possible coil issue.

Here's something to check - the distributor vacuum advance disc inside the distributor is known to lock up from rust and or dried/baked oil. If that happens it can lock in the advanced position (cruising speed), which would effect the timing upon start-up (too advanced). That part is what the external vacuum advance unit attaches to inside the distributor. If you're up to doing distributor maintenance, it's easy to check. The disc should rotate freely. To unseize you can use any carb spray cleaner plus moving the part back and forth until it moves freely. WD40 will work as well.

Also, a major vacuum leak somewhere along the intake could also effect start-up. The vac advance unit itself is a likely suspect. Worn loose rubber grommets and seals are common leak sources. All of them together would cause significant start issues.
