smoking on idle when warming up

hello all u Saab nuts
i have been reading hundreds of your forum pages in search of advice for my prob and your knowledge and enthusiasm shames me
i have a 1990 t16s that only smokes (white but oily smelling) once its been running for 5 mins (usually enough time to get stuck at the traffic lights and sit embarrassed in my cloud)
when warmed up, about a third into the green, it stops smoking
i occasionally notice a puff if i throttle off after long acceleration
rest of the time its totally clear
the car runs perfectly with bags of oomph
it does drink a little water over the months but the radiator is in pretty bad shape and due for replacement
a few fountains of wisdom have automatically suggested the turbo but i seek to confirm or refute before shelling out for a recon or second hand
a replacement turbo was fitted 2 years ago from a car that had done only 40k (allegedly)
please excuse any forum faux pas and spellings as im thick as..and new to this malarkey
any advice, checks, remedies would be massively appreciated as im down to one car now having recently lost my beloved 92 900SE
many thanks
iain
