Why no fix for leaky distributor

I'm kind of getting tired of the oil ending up in my distributor. From what I've read in the archives, you can't really avoid this besides replacing the distributor. It also seems that there is a spiral cut into the distributor shaft that is supposed to push oil back in the head. I imagine after years of use the spiral gets crudded up and is no longer spiral and becomes ineffective.
So, why can't this spiral be cleaned to it's once spiral glory? Or, if there is a bushing that wears out, why can't it be replaced?
It seems the only options are live with it or replace the distributor.
Thanks.
Tushy
